本模板的用意是為了迴避{{tl|Cite journal}}中所出現的全形標點符號，例如<nowiki>，</nowiki>或<nowiki>「」</nowiki>，這些符號有些可能只會出現在繁體版本，此外也是為了避免在英語文獻中穿插中文字（例如「2004年」）。相關指引參見[[WP:CITE]]。

此模板專門使用於英語文獻或其他相同格式的語言。由於中文版與英文版的內部連結並不一致，請盡量不要直接套用英文版的內部連結。例如「[[July 4]]」。
